Bergbauern

For centuries, their families have been managing small farms in the Bavarian Alps, thus preserving a unique cultural and natural landscape. Photographer Klaus Maria Einwanger accompanied the last mountain farmers for several years. They are the focus of his new documentary photo book with the title of the same name. Breathtaking landscapes, unique insights and intimate moments inspired internationally renowned photographer Klaus Maria Einwanger to create his new work.

Every year, we experience their exhausting working lives, their livelihoods, but also moments of happiness with family and animals, side by side with mountain farmers. Mountain farmers — the aesthetic discovery of a little-known world that is so close by.

In his own visual language, Einwanger's photo book documents the gradual change in a traditional form of agriculture, which today is usually only possible as a sideline. The pressure from the world market on small farmers, who must generate additional income from tourism, timber industry and fruit growing in order to survive is too great.

It is Klaus Maria Einwanger's homage to his homeland and at the same time an appeal to reconsider regionality and small farming.

We would like to thank our partner Bergader for their support.
